Video Collaboration

Here is a new release from bright young composer/arranger/keyboardist Jared Richardson. If you scroll through some older posts you may recall Jared did an amazing medley arrangement of ‘re-imagined’ ABBA songs (here), and in this latest video he arranged and mixed “Dragon Roost Island” from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker! I’m attaching a chart in case any drummers are interested in following along, as the left foot hi-hat part was quite specific.

I’m busy preparing for my first semester teaching at Selkirk college in beautiful Nelson British Columbia. This is quite a huge preparation job and I’m currently writing all new drum curriculum for the students, plus preparing to teach Arranging, Recording Techniques, Midi, and Ensembles. It will be a busy year so I apologize if you don’t hear from me much. I will still be releasing my album but need to delay it a bit as this move to Nelson and preparation has taken all my energy over the past 2 months. I do look forward to sharing new music with you as soon as I can. I hope to release some singles over winter and then have a full release now for next summer. I am very excited about the opportunities ahead both musically and educationally. Please keep in touch!

best wishes,

Joel

Maynard Ferguson live at the Klaipeda Jazz Festival – Lithuania

It was cool to discover this broadcast video from a concert I played with Maynard Ferguson in Lithuania back in 2003.  I toured with Maynard’s “Big Bop Nouveau” band for about 10 months in 2002-2003, and this gig was etched in my memory because the audience had such an incredible warmth and generosity, I think the most supportive audience I’ve ever experienced. My drum solo is from around 7:00-13:40 and I could feel the crowd’s amazing energy from the stage. Cool to see it again, and it reminds me that music truly is the universal language. Really hope you enjoy! 🙏

Drum Charts

Hey friends,

I’ve updated the drum charts page with a few new ones. Not a lot of gigs right now due to new Covid restrictions unfortunately, so not making these like I used to. But I really hope you find them helpful (ie, ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ by Wheatus is a bit more complex than you might realize!😁)

I’m trying some new ways for people to donate if you like these (or have any requests), and I do really appreciate the few people who have donated when downloading these charts. Takes me about an hour or two for each chart depending on complexity.

I now have a MetaMask account if you wish to send money via ether ETH

or the traditional Paypal donate button.

THANK YOU!

ABBA ‘re-imagined’ medley – drums

Jared Richardson put an incredible amount of time and work into this ‘re-imagined’ ABBA medley. I recorded the drums for him here at my home studio.

I’m attaching the drum chart here in case any drummers are interested. It’s probably one the most detailed and specific (and difficult!) drum charts I’ve ever had to to read, so thought some of you might enjoy following along.

Best wishes,

Joel

New Video Collaboration

Our 2020 ‘Homeroom’ cover of the classic Peter Gabriel song ‘In Your Eyes.’

This video features the amazing talents of Nate Coon on drums, David Deshazo on bass, Daran Deshazo on guitar, Shruti Ramani on vocals, plus myself on vocals and keyboards.  Really hope you enjoy!

Also, some gigs are slowly coming back, but things could change at any moment. I try to post my gigs on my facebook page if you are interested in coming out. But please stay safe out there, and thanks for stopping by! 🙏
